Mikel Arteta says Aaron Ramsdale was 'terrific' for Arsenal against Norwich
Arsenal got their season up and running this afternoon with a narrow victory against Daniel Farke’s Norwich City side in North London.
A goal from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was enough for the Gunners to see off the Canaries and finally register three Premier League points for the season.
Manager Mikel Arteta made a couple of bold choices with his selection. He picked Sambi Albert Lokonga in midfield, while Emile Smith Rowe was deemed not fit enough to start.
In defence, he gave a debut to Takehiro Tomiyasu, while he also made the bold call to pick Aaron Ramsdale ahead of Bernd Leno. And the decision to pick Ramsdale proved a good one.
Arteta pleased with Ramsdale
The former Sheffield United stopper has been brought into the club to challenge Leno and, eventually, become the regular number one.
And Arteta, speaking after the game, confessed he thought Ramsdale was ‘terrific’ during the win over the Canaries.
“I think he was terrific. It is not only what he did on the technical side, it is what he transmits, his energy, his chemistry with the backline, how he reacts, his body language… I think it was top,” Arteta told the club’s official website.
“We have two fantastic goalkeepers and never forgot what Bernd has done for us and what a good goalkeeper he is. I had to make decisions and I felt Aaron was the right one to do so and like in any other position, and that is what we decided today.”
TBR’s View: Ramsdale now the number one for Arsenal?
Ramsdale’s signing came under fire from sections of the Gunners’ fanbase.
But he’s kept two clean-sheets in his two appearances thus far. And despite not being overly busy today, he looked assured when needed. That’s not what can be said of Bernd Leno so far this term.
For now, it looks like Ramsdale is going to keep his place. And rightly so.
