Mikel Arteta says £16m ace is ‘very close’ to Arsenal first-team return

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed that Gunners defender Calum Chambers is “very close” to a first-team return.

The 25-year-old joined Arsenal in the summer of 2014 for a reported fee of up to £16million, and has made 101 competitive appearances for the Gunners.

However, Chambers hasn’t played senior football since last December, when he suffered a serious knee injury during the first half of the Premier League loss to Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.

The England international, who was one of Arsenal’s star men before Arteta’s arrival, has since returned to action for the Under-23s, featuring in the Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy.

Speaking ahead of the Gunners’ Europa League meeting with Rapid Vienna, the Spaniard provided an update on the 6ft ace.

“He’s evolving really well,” Arteta told Football London. “He’s played some minutes with the Under-23s in recent weeks.

“It’s been a long injury and you know that injuries like that take a long time to get your body, your bio-mechanics completely natural to compete. But I will say that now he’s very close to returning to play.”

It’s been a long, hard road to recovery for Chambers, but having come through several U23 matches unscathed, it’s great to hear that he’s very close to being back in the first team.

Arsenal have been struggling in the Premier League in recent weeks so the return of Chambers, plus several other players like Gabriel Martinelli also progressing nicely, will be a huge boost.
