Mikel Arteta responds with six-word comment when asked if Jack Wilshere will actually re-sign for Arsenal

Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Arsenal are in talks with Jack Wilshere to join Gunners training – and has reacted when asked if he will actually sign.

Wilshere, 29, is currently a free agent after Championship side Bournemouth chose not to extend his contract – despite playing 18 times.

The 34-time England international was last seen training with second-tier Italian side Como. The Serie B club have Dennis Wise on their board.

A contract has not been earned, and Wilshere recently gave an interview in which he has is struggling to find a new club – with interest sparce.

Asked about Wilshere, Arteta confirmed the two parties are in talks over bringing Wilshere in for training. He also reacted if Wilshere will sign on.

“We are in conversations with Jack to understand as well what he needs what he’s looking for. We are willing to help him as much as we can.”

Arteta then responded when asked if Wilshere will re-sign for the Gunners, and the Spaniard said: “I wouldn’t take it that far.”

There is no reason why might not get an Arsenal deal. Wilshere, of course, is plagued by injury. But if he remains fit and impresses, could he?

It all depends on his fitness. If Wilshere can shine in training – which is likely given his quality – but also stay fit, Arteta would be foolish not to.

Arsenal could do with a dynamic, progressive midfielder. Dani Ceballos has left, as has Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira.

But the big question mark, is whether Wilshere can stay fit. It all hinges on that, and if the Gunners feel it is necessary to sign another midfielder.
