Mikel Arteta has claimed – in comments reported by Football London – that it was great to hear that Mesut Ozil predicted a 4-1 win for Arsenal on Twitter ahead of their Europa League clash with Rapid Vienna on Thursday.
It would have been nice for Arteta to be able to focus on matters happening on the pitch after the talk in the build-up to the game had been dominated by Ozil’s situation in North London.
It was confirmed this week that Ozil had been left out of the Gunners’ Premier League squad. The 31-year-old had already been omitted for the Europa League.
It now arguably looks to be difficult to see Ozil playing for the Gunners again. But he put any disappointment to one side as he took to Twitter ahead of the contest. He backed Arsenal to secure a comfortable victory.
Ultimately, he was slightly off with the scoreline, with Arteta’s men winning 2-1. And none of the goalscorers he predicted ended up on the score sheet.
Nevertheless, Arteta was full of praise for Ozil for getting behind the team in that way.
“It’s great,” he said, as reported by Football London, when asked about the tweet. “This is what I want from the players who aren’t in the squad.”
It would surely be incredibly beneficial for Arteta if Ozil does continue to lend his support to the team.
It is, unfortunately, not a situation that is likely to be resolved anytime soon, so unless he is going to leave, it makes sense for all parties to try and keep everything as amicable as possible.
