Mikel Arteta has insisted that Reiss Nelson’s recent absence from the Arsenal squad is down to injury rather than any plans to offload the youngster in January – in comments reported by Football London.
Nelson has not been seen for the Gunners in almost a month. And while he has predominantly featured in the Europa League, there was a spell in late November in which he was also involved in the Premier League.

His disappearance may have left some wondering whether he was out of favour. But ahead of this weekend’s clash with West Brom, Arteta provided some clarity on his situation.
“He had a little niggle he’s not been 100%,” he said, as reported by Football London. “He’s had a muscular issue. He’s been in and out of training, he’s not been 100%.
“It’s a shame because I felt he was getting into his performance levels, he started to have some really good games and he was starting to build that momentum. This little injury set him back a little bit. But I think he’s been much better.”

Arteta was then asked about the idea that his absence dropped any sort of hint that he may be available in January.
“No. Only it’s my mistake then not clarify the situation what is happening,” he added. “But yeah, he’s not been 100% fit.”
Some may argue that a loan move could be good for Nelson. Upon his return from injury, the 21-year-old faces a tough task trying to get back into the side.
The likes of Emile Smith Rowe and Gabriel Martinelli have been revelations recently. And of course, Arteta also has a number of more experienced options up his sleeve.
Nelson – who earns £15,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – is arguably at a crucial age for his development. And a loan move may not be a bad option for the youngster if he is going to struggle to get into Arteta’s plans in the coming months.
