Mikel Arteta may have reason to hand Arsenal’s Joe Willock first league appearance this term

There is arguably no member of Arsenal’s squad using the Europa League better than Joe Willock when it comes to trying to make a point to Mikel Arteta.

The 21-year-old has two goals and one assist in the competition so far. And he has often been the player that many Arsenal fans have been impressed with after they have taken to the field on a Thursday.

Willock however, is yet to make a single Premier League appearance this season. It may have been a real shock to the system for a player who featured in 29 top fight games last term.

But perhaps, an opportunity may have just opened up in unfortunate circumstances.

As reported by BBC Sport, Mohamed Elneny is now a doubt for Arsenal’s next two games. He has reportedly tested positive for coronavirus and is now awaiting further results.

Should Elneny be forced to miss out, Arteta will have to make a change in the middle of the park for Sunday’s trip to Leeds.

Granit Xhaka is perhaps the most likely name to come in alongside Thomas Partey at Elland Road. Meanwhile, Dani Ceballos and Ainsley Maitland-Niles could also be contenders.

But surely Willock also needs to be in that conversation. Xhaka and Ceballos have come in for criticism this term. And Maitland-Niles has predominantly featured as a wing-back during Arteta’s time in charge.

So if Arteta is going to pick the in-form option to replace Elneny, Willock will surely be the one to get the nod.
