Arsenal signed Nuno Tavares from Benfica last summer and the young Portuguese full-back really caught the eye in the first half of the campaign.

One of the Gunners’ priorities in last year’s transfer window was a backup left-back to provide cover for Kieran Tierney. The Scotsman is Arsenal’s undisputed first-choice in his position, but Tavares managed to give him a little scare.

The 22-year-old kept the ex-Celtic man on the bench back in October and November last year and many Arsenal fans were convinced that he’s the real deal. However, he has had a tough time in 2022, especially in his first few appearances this year.

What On Earth Is Going On At Bordeaux?

That could be why Mikel Arteta is reportedly looking to replace Tavares already.

Arsenal want to sign left-back Aaron Hickey

Reports from Italy, as covered by TBR Football, a few days ago claimed that Arsenal have made contact with Bologna to sign Aaron Hickey this summer.

The Scottish international is still only 19 and is a left-back by trade. However, he can play on the opposite side as well and Arteta could be looking at him as a versatile option.

The report claims that Bologna, who sold Takehiro Tomiyasu to Arsenal on transfer deadline day last summer, are looking for a fee in the region of £17 million to let Hickey go this summer.

That shouldn’t really be a problem for Arsenal, but what would Hickey’s arrival mean for Tavares?

Nuno Tavares’ Gunners career could come to an end soon

Arsenal forked out £6.8 million to sign Tavares from Benfica last summer (Guardian).

The former Portugal under-21 international really is a talented player and his potential is massive. However, some of his performances this year, especially in defence, haven’t been up to the mark.

Arteta has already hauled him off at 35 minutes and 45 minutes respectively this season, and the Arsenal boss even preferred Granit Xhaka at left-back once. Now, just a few weeks after, Arsenal are said to have made contact with Hickey, who is a hugely talented left-back himself.

If Arsenal sign the Scotsman this summer, Tavares’ career at the Emirates may well come to an end, just one year after he secured his big move.
