Mikel Arteta has labelled Alexandre Lacazette’s performance in Arsenal’s defeat to Liverpool ‘incredible’, and insisted that he was pleased with what he saw from the Frenchman, in comments reported by Football London.

It was tough night for the Gunners, who suffered their first defeat of the new season. They took the lead through Lacazette. However, they went into the break 2-1 behind.

They seemed to find it difficult to get anywhere near the final third in the first-half. However, they seemed to find another couple of gears in the second-half and looked much better.

And that led to Lacazette having a couple of superb chances. Unfortunately on both occasions, he was foiled by Alisson. Admittedly, the flag went up following one of the opportunities.

Lacazette was ultimately replaced with just over 15 minutes remaining. But Arteta hinted that he could not ask for more from the 29-year-old.

“The boys were really disappointed to lose the game, they really believed we could come here and do it. For large periods of the game we were right there,” he said, as reported by Football London.

“Obviously he had the best chance in the game to make it 2-2 and again put us in a really strong position. He had a great game, he put an incredible performance again and I’m pleased with him.”

TBR View: Plenty of positives for Arsenal and Lacazette in defeat

Lacazette is not the first striker to have been out-thought by Alisson this season. And he will definitely not be the last.

He can take confidence from the fact that he has now scored three goals in three league games. While he did miss a couple of chances, there were times where he looked like Arsenal’s best player by some distance.

It was always unlikely to be a night for the Gunners to play their most expansive football. They appeared to have a game-plan. And, as Arteta notes, they had the chances to make the score 2-2 before the champions bagged their third goal late on.
