Mikel Arteta isn’t even starting the only player making good runs at Arsenal, says Theo Walcott

Arsenal failed to pick up three points in another big game this past weekend against Manchester City, but Theo Walcott was impressed by one particular individual.

The Gunners had to come from behind against Pep Guardiola’s men following a ninth-minute goal from Erling Haaland, as Gabriel Martinelli scored a 93rd-minute equaliser for Arsenal.

However, Martinelli started the game on the bench as Mikel Arteta opted to play Leandro Trossard on the left wing from the start.

The Brazil international made his mark, though, showcasing that he still has something to offer Arsenal, regardless of all the recent signings.

Theo Walcott believes Gabriel Martinelli’s patience was ‘rewarded’ against Man City

Martinelli’s impressive cameo came after scoring in the Champions League, but he insisted after the game that he’s just doing whatever it takes to help Arsenal.

Walcott was impressed by what he saw from the winger and praised Martinelli’s movement during BBC’s Match of the Day.

“Then three minutes later, this happens, the connection, the eye contact, Eze and Martinelli are talking about it. And the run is perfect: the timing, everything about the goal and the finish.

“We can come onto the keeper shortly, but for me, when you’re in that position, there’s only one finish you’re doing.

“Martinelli’s rewarded tonight for his patience, and to actually come off the bench. It says a lot about his character.”

Walcott was then asked whether or not Martinelli is one of the few players who will make runs in behind, which is an aspect of the game Walcott is very familiar with.

“He’s the only one! He’ll be happy not to have the ball, make those runs, use his speed. No one else in that team does that.”

Gabriel Martinelli has dropped out of the Arsenal team

Despite starting the first two games of the season for Arsenal, Martinelli has dropped out of the team for the previous two Premier League fixtures.

The signing of Eberechi Eze has raised questions about his long-term future at the Emirates Stadium, but Martinelli’s past two performances have proven he has much to offer.

The Brazilian has scored twice and provided an assist in those games, showcasing that he can still influence games when given the opportunity.

TBR Football previously revealed that Martinelli’s future might be looked at in the January transfer window. However, given the injuries that Arteta has already had to deal with, that might not be the case.
