Mikel Arteta has pointed out that a number of players have turned their careers around during his time at Arsenal as he was asked by beIN Sports about whether Mesut Ozil has a chance to return to the fold at the Emirates.
As things stand, it is difficult to see Ozil playing for the Gunners again. He has been left out of their Premier League and Europa League squads for the first-half of the year.
And with his £350,000-a-week contract expiring next summer (via Daily Mail), his departure has a real sense of inevitability about it.
Ozil’s situation has been widely discussed by supporters in recent times following Arsenal’s struggles in front of goal. Clearly some feel that he would offer something that no other player in the squad can provide.
For now however, the 32-year-old is out of the frame. But, while Arteta obviously felt unable to look too far in the future, he seemed to suggest that the door has not been completely shut.
“Well everybody can [find their way back into the team] and I think since I arrived here you see where some players have started and where they are right now, their careers are completely changed and they have earned that right. We gave them the opportunities and they took them,” he told beIN Sports.
It is going to be fascinating to see if Ozil’s situation changes at any point. A new contract at the Emirates is surely out of the question.
He is edging towards the latter stages of his career. And Arsenal are surely not going to want to offer him anything like the wages he is currently on.
But that does not necessarily mean that he cannot still contribute this season.
Of course, that looks unlikely. But, as Arteta notes, a number of players have already fought back from the brink.
