Mikel Arteta gives honest opinion on Arsenal goalkeeper Emi Martinez

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has suggested to Football London ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Liverpool that Emi Martinez’s form has delighted him.

The Spaniard has been without Bernd Leno since a defeat to Brighton last month, with the 27-year-old deputising for the German.

Martinez has been with Arsenal for eight years but has struggled to impose himself on the first team.

The Argentine has spent time on loan with Oxford, Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham United, Wolves, Getafe and Reading.

Since taking over the gloves from Leno, Martinez has helped the Gunners to three wins and a draw from six games, keeping three clean sheets in the process.

Arteta has been overwhelmed by his custodian since placing his faith in him.

He told Football London: “In terms of Emi’s character and his goalkeeping ability, I didn’t have any question marks.

“The way he trains every day, the way he behaves and has been behaving since he’s been at the club is phenomenal.

“He was a question mark over how he was going to do because he didn’t have any Premier League experience, but not he’s more than ready to do it.

“He’s earned the place now, he’s doing really well and he’s playing with a lot of confidence. He needs to keep going.”

Martinez was considering leaving the Gunners last summer to kick-start his career and play regular first-team football.

Goal claimed he was growing tired of going on loan and that a move could be sought by the player.

TBR View – Martinez finally grasping his opportunity

The man with five Argentina under-20 caps has been forced to wait very patiently and cut his teeth out on loan.

He was always a player who spoke about simply wanting a chance and boy is he now taking his chance to shine with aplomb.

Martinez was powerless to prevent Arsenal from losing to Tottenham at the weekend but he will just be delighted to be playing regular football.

The 27-year-old will hope to continue impressing and ultimately try to force his way into the side on a regular basis again next season.
