Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has given his reasoning behind the decision to not start new signing Thomas Partey at Man City this weekend.
The Gunners boss resisted the temptation to chuck the Ghana star straight into the limelight, instead introducing his new signing off the bench towards the end of the game.
Plenty of Arsenal fans were hoping to see Partey in action from the start. But Arteta, speaking to the Gunners’ official website, explained that there was more than one reason behind the Ghanaian’s absence.
“We will see how quickly we can make it with him. I think we have to respect that process and that timing for him because he only trained for a day really and there’s a lot of new information and different game models for him to understand, and we have to respect that.
“But I think when he came on he looked good.”
Partey signed for the Gunners on deadline day, with the club paying Atletico the release-clause of just shy of £50m to land the midfielder.
He will be hoping to dislodge either Granit Xhaka or Dani Ceballos from the midfield and prove his worth in the coming weeks.

This happens all the time with new signings so it wasn’t too much of a shock to see Partey on the bench.
He’s only been in London a matter of weeks so to be simply thrust into action against City was perhaps too much of an ask.
However, he’ll get his chance soon enough. As Arteta said, his cameo was impressive enough and at just shy of £50m, Arsenal won’t be hanging around too long before unleashing their man.
