Mikel Arteta has told his pre-Leeds United press conference – as per Arsenal’s official website – that he expects striker Folarin Balogun to sign a new deal with the North London side, and Gunners supporters have responded to his comments on Twitter.

Balogun, 19, is out of contract in the summer and has been linked with numerous clubs such as RB Leipzig and Brentford. The Gunners have failed to tie up his future despite Balogun’s form in his five substitute appearances and PL2 outings.

He has scored two goals in five substitute appearances, while also netting seven goals in 13 Premier League 2 games while captaining the second string. His long-term future remains up in the air and it has been unclear if Arsenal wanted to keep him.

The Gunners have Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Gabriel Martinelli and Eddie Nketiah as options up top, though Martinelli has been injured, Aubameyang has been used on the left and Nketiah is struggling for form.

But Arteta is confident Balogun will stay, and sign a new deal:I’m still very positive that Flo is going to stay with us and it’s what we’re trying to do as a club, and myself as a manager. As far as I know from last week, the player wants to be here.”

Arsenal fans reacted on Twitter to the news that Arteta had commented on Balogun’s future at the North London club. Many are keen to see him remain at The Emirates, while others think him staying will see Nketiah to leave in the summer.
