Mikel Arteta confirms Arsenal will enter talks over Martin Odegaard deal
Arsenal will enter talks to sign Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid during the summer, Mikel Arteta confirmed after Sunday’s final day victory over Brighton.
After the 2-0 win, the Spanish boss spoke to the press and was adamant that talks will take place between Arsenal and the Madrid-based giants once the transfer window reopens.
Nicolas Pepe scored twice for the Gunners yesterday, although victories for Tottenham and West Ham mean there will be no European football for Arsenal next season.
That could have an impact on whether or not Odegaard fancies a return to the club – but it won’t stop the Gunners from having a conversation with his parent club.
Arteta told the Daily Express: “We have a very clear and strong opinion on what we’d like to do.
“He’s not our player, we will have discussions in the next few weeks. We respect he’s a Real Madrid player and will have those communications.”
The 22-year-old is viewed as a player with significant potential, although his numbers during his time at Arsenal weren’t great.
He managed just two goals and two assists during 20 appearances, although he did net a memorable strike against Tottenham at the Emirates Stadium.
TBR View: Arsenal would be wise to pursue Odegaard again
With European football not on the agenda for next season, the Gunners will need to cut their cloth accordingly. That, in turn, could see them forced into shopping in a different market.
Odegaard now knows and understands the Arsenal principals though and if Arteta can get the £80,000-a-week playmaker back, it would represent a coup.
Although he could have more goals and assists, his performances have been largely impressive and he’s more than showcased his talents.
Odegaard is a player who can dazzle on his day and with a proper pre-season and more minutes under his belt, he could become a real player for Arsenal next season.
