Mikel Arteta comments on how Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney is in training
Mikel Arteta has hinted – in comments reported by Arsenal’s official website – that one of the issues Kieran Tierney has as he looks to maintain his fitness is the degree to which he pushes himself – even when on the training ground.
Tierney has missed the Gunners’ last four games due to injury. He had also missed the goalless draw with Crystal Palace in mid-January.
It is a blow for Arsenal to lose Tierney, particularly when they lack cover at left-back. The defender endured a tough first season at the Emirates due to injury problems.
Arteta was asked about whether there was a need to manage Tierney carefully. And he hinted that part of the problem centres around the commitment the 23-year-old has whenever he is out on the pitch.
“Kieran is a player that really pushes himself and he has to be able to perform physically at his best because he cannot help himself,” he told the club’s official website. “Even in training he can’t help himself.
“We are trying to manage him in the best possible way and find every possibility to give him the best chance to be fit as soon as possible, and we are here to support him as much as we can.”
TBR View: Arteta unlikely to ask Tierney to change
In truth, it is that commitment that has endeared Tierney to the Arsenal supporters since his £25 million arrival (fee reported by Sky Sports).
Even with the Gunners were struggling for form, Tierney’s work-rate provided a shining light. He was one of the only players who rarely came in for criticism.
It has led many to back the Scotland international to become a future Arsenal captain. He already appears to be one of those who really leads by example amongst the squad.
So you can understand if Arteta would rather lose him to injury from time to time than ask him to change his style in any way.
