Mikel Arteta asked if Bernd Leno will stay at Arsenal
Mikel Arteta has issued a nine-word response when asked if he expects Bernd Leno to still be at Arsenal next season – in comments reported by Football London.
Leno’s future heading into the summer looks to be a little uncertain. The Telegraph recently reported that there was a growing feeling amongst some at the Emirates that the German’s time with the Gunners was coming to an end.
Leno has since insisted that he wants to stay (via Sky Sports). But with a summer overhaul likely in North London, it may not be a surprise if more was set to be said about the futures of several players before the start of next season.
Arteta was asked about Leno keeping the number one spot beyond this campaign. And after insisting that there is always likely to be speculation, he was asked whether he felt that he was staying.
“He has two years here and he belongs here,” he said, as reported by Football London.
If Arsenal get the best from Leno, the 29-year-old – who earns £100,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – is one of the Premier League’s best goalkeepers. It should not be forgotten that he was one of Arsenal’s best players up until his injury last season.
He has perhaps not hit those heights since his return and Emi Martinez’s departure. But he is also at an age where he may only just be approaching his peak.
Perhaps, it may be wise for all parties to keep their options open. But there is every reason to think that Leno can prove the number one Arsenal need as they look to move back up the table.
