Alex Ferguson is considered one of the greatest managers of all-time.
Alex Ferguson won 13 Premier League titles with Manchester United as well as two Champions League trophies.
Ferguson was an incredible motivator and a top tactician, but he was also a savvy operator in the transfer market too.
Ferguson made some incredible signings during his time at Manchester United.
Jamie Carragher believes Peter Schmeichel was Ferguson’s best signing at Old Trafford, but speaking to the BBC, Mike Phelan has shared a different perspective.
Indeed, Phelan named Eric Cantona as Ferguson’s best signing at United, while he, interestingly, put Ji-Sung Park as Fergie’s second-best buy.

Mike Phelan names Alex Ferguson’s best Manchester United signings
Phelan shared his verdict on Ferguson’s best signings at Manchester United.
The former United assistant manager says that Cantona was Ferguson’s best signing, but Park wasn’t too far behind, placing ahead of the likes of Robin van Persie, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney.
“My top five signings that Alex Ferguson made in my time,” Phelan began.
“Number one, Cantona, he brought something completely left field to whatever was going on at the time. French, good looking, he knew how to play football, he gelled the team into that winning mentality.
“Number two, Ji-Sung Park, he was one that nobody really knew about nobody understood that signing at the time, but what a bundle of energy, he could run all day.
“Three, Robin van Persie, he took us to the title in Sir Alex’s final season, made the difference.
“Four, Wayne Rooney, a great signing, young, enthusiastic, winner.
“Five, Ronaldo, he speaks for himself, because he was going to be or was in his mind the best player in the world. He achieved that at Manchester United, Real Madrid and he’s still playing to this day.”
Ji-Sung Park stats for Manchester United
Park cost United just £4m all those years ago, and what a signing he was.
Thierry Henry recently praised Park, claiming that he was a player who always turned up in the big matches for the Red Devils.
“He did it always in big games for Manchester United, Ji-Sung Park,” said Henry.
Park’s stats show that he was incredible value for money for United. Yes, he didn’t score the most goals or create the most assists, but he was a mainstay in this side for a long time and he won countless trophies.
| Ji-Sung Park stats for Man Utd | |
| Games | 204 |
| Goals | 28 |
| Assists | 28 |
| Trophies | 7 |
Park may not have been as exciting as Ronaldo, Rooney or van Persie, but in terms of value for money, consistency and reliability, United, or any team for that matter, haven’t made many better signings than Park.
As for right now, United currently sit in the bottom-half of the Premier League table, a long way away from glory, and they could do with unearthing a few players in the January transfer window who have the heart, passion and talent that Park had.
