Mikael Silvestre claims 27-year-old who Arsenal want is being way overpriced

Mikael Silvestre has claimed that Arsenal would be overpaying if they were to meet Brentford’s demands for Ivan Toney.

The England international has been strongly linked with a move to the north London side this January, with Arsenal looking to sign a striker this month.

However, Brentford’s reported demands of £100m have resulted in little progress actually being made, with Arsenal yet to make an official move for Toney.

And speaking to GGrecon, former defender Silvestre has now urged the north London side to look elsewhere in the market, with £100m simply too much for a player like Toney.

Silvestre said: “£100m is extremely high. I know goalscorers are very rare, but that’s too much money for Ivan. I don’t believe that price is a true reflection of his quality.

“Brentford clearly want to keep him and that’s why the price tag is so high, but if I was Arsenal, I wouldn’t even consider a move for that amount and I don’t believe they could even afford to pay that much for a player in the January window when you consider Financial Fair Play.”

Arsenal shouldn’t be spending £100m on Ivan Toney

£100m is quickly becoming the norm in football for what clubs are now willing to spend on world-class players to take them to the next level.

Arsenal are now no strangers to such a trend having spent well over £100m last summer to sign Declan Rice, a transfer that has transformed the north London side’s midfield for the better.

Yet for a 27-year-old player like Toney, the Gunners should simply not be looking to break the bank for the England international, who is yet to even play this season due to his ongoing betting ban.

Indeed, whilst Toney is a great goalscorer, Arsenal know that they shouldn’t be spending as much as £100m on the Brentford man, with better options out there in the market for the north London side.
