The weekend saw Celtic defender Mikael Lustig linked with a move back to his homeland. Recently crowned Swedish champions AIK are said to be keen on the player. As reported by FotbolDirekt, the Swedish international has been identified as a key target to help AIK in their European adventures next season.

Lustig is out of contract in the summer but recently spoke of his desire to sign a new deal at Celtic. However, with this opportunity to cash in on the player, Celtic should make it happen.

“You can wonder as much as you want, but I have a contract with Celtic and I think I’ll play there next year too.”

Lustig has been a fine servant at Parkhead. He joined the club from Rosenborg in 2012 and has gone on to become a regular in the Celtic defence in the years since.

However, his recent form has been patchy to be polite. Fans at Celtic have long been doubting his ability to maintain decent form for the Bhoys.

AIK will no doubt want to sign him in January before the new Swedish season kicks off in April.  At that point, Celtic could still demand a small fee for the player. If they decide not to keep him, he will go for nothing in the summer.

With Celtic said to be looking at other right-back options the time has come for Lustig and the Glasgow club to part ways.
