'Might just make a move': Alasdair Gold believes Spurs could potentially swoop for 'terrific' PL star

Alasdair Gold has given his verdict on speculation linking Tottenham Hotspur with James Maddison.

The football.london Spurs correspondent wrote about the Leicester star in his latest Q&A on the website.

Tottenham have been reportedly eyeing Maddison for a long time.

Speculation has arisen again, though Gold recently claimed that Tottenham insiders have played it down.

“Lots of people asking about James Maddison,” he said on his YouTube channel last week.

“Interestingly, Spurs really playing that down.

“Anyone we asked out on the tour about Maddison really played that down and said no, nothing happening there.”

However, Gold believes that, if the opportunity arises, Spurs could well make a move for the 25-year-old.

“Such a terrific season last time out”

A fan asked Gold whether there were any news on Nicolo Zaniolo and/or Maddison, as well as who he’d prefer.

“Both are very talented and both are players Spurs have had a long-held interest in,” began the football.london journalist.

“Maddison, 25, had a terrific season last time out with 18 goals and 12 assists and he’s homegrown.

“While 23-year-old Zaniolo came back from two serious cruciate injuries to play 42 times last season for Roma, with eight goals and nine assists.

“Spurs’ focus right now is on getting players out of the door but they are still looking at opportunities for attacking midfielders and strikers, as well as another centre-back depending on who departs.

“The club shot down the Maddison links during the Korea tour but I can’t help that feel if there is a movement around the player from other sides and the chance to prise him away arises they might just make a move.

“With Zaniolo, Conte and Paratici will know him well and if Spurs are convinced that those injury woes are behind him then he’s a very creative player if they believe he can step into the Premier League’s physicality without problems.

“Both players’ versatility will also appeal to Conte as they can play out wide on the right if required.

“My personal preference is perhaps Maddison, purely because he had such a terrific season last time out and helps the homegrown numbers angle, but both are excellent players.”

Can Tottenham wrap up summer business with “sensational” midfielder?

Maddison would be a great shout, as he’s a world-class, Premier League-proven player in the peak of his career.

The £110,000-a-week attacker was back to his best last season, registering 18 goals and provide 12 assists in all competitions.

Brendan Rodgers said Maddison was ‘sensational‘ as Leicester came eighth and reached the Conference League semi-finals.

Spurs have been doing some impressive summer business and Maddison would be a real cherry on top.
