A number of Everton fans have taken to Twitter to have their say on Mario Gotze being advised to join a club like the Toffees by compatriot Michael Rummenigge.
Gotze’s CV speaks for itself, having scored the winner in the 2014 World Cup final, as well as five Bundesliga titles, four German Cups and several Super Cups.
However, the 27-year-old is currently struggling for game time at Borussia Dortmund, with a mere 13 Bundesliga appearances this season, just five of which have been starts.
Gotze, who rejoined Dortmund from Bayern Munich in 2016 for a reported £22million, has been limited to a bit-part role this season by head coach Lucien Favre amid fitness issues and lack of form.
Rummenigge, who like Gotze enjoyed fruitful spells with Dortmund and Bayern, wrote in his weekly Sportbuzzer column: “I’m thinking clubs like Everton or West Ham or some Italian middle-of-the-table club.
“In the Bundesliga, he could fit with Borussia Monchengladbach or Leverkusen. I hope that he shakes off the pressure and finds his way although, right now, I have my doubts.”
There is no doubting that Gotze is football royalty, with the likes of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Manchester City counterpart Pep Guardiola having sung his praises.
Klopp handed Gotze his Bundesliga debut at the age of 17, and singled out his former charge as “the best young player I ever coached.” (Bundesliga website)
Guardiola, meanwhile, previously told BeIN Sports when the two were both at Bayern: “I love Mario Gotze, he’s a top player. He has massive quality and a good attitude.”
However, reaction from sections of the Everton fanbase regarding Gotze coming to Goodison Park has been mixed at best:
Makes me feel like I support a small club now that he said West Ham

Had a lot of ability. Lost his way a bit.
For the right price. Perhaps.

Obviously knows nothing about football if he fits Everton in the same bracket as West Ham the crab!
