Mido and Joey Barton disagree on incident, as Tottenham and Liverpool play out draw

Tottenham and Liverpool played out an enthralling 2-2 draw in North London on Sunday evening, in a game full of drama. Discussing a potential red card for Harry Kane, Mido and Joey Barton offered differing opinions.

Coming into the match, Liverpool had just beaten Newcastle 4-1 three days beforehand. However, Tottenham had not played in a fortnight – with a wave of positive tests seeing Spurs last turn out against Norwich on December 5.

But Sunday’s game against Liverpool went ahead, and Spurs were excellent. Antonio Conte’s side took the lead, Harry Kane scoring only his second league goal of the season – after being sent through on goal by Tanguy Ndombele.

Controversially, VAR allowed Diogo Jota’s equaliser to stand despite a potential handball from Mo Salah. Liverpool went 2-1 ahead through Andy Robertson, before Son Heung-min made it 2-2 on 74 minutes.

Kane was shown a yellow card in the first half, for a studs-up challenge on Robertson. VAR ruled a yellow sufficed, before Robertson was sent off for a tackle in the second 45. Mido and Barton discussed the tackle on Twitter.

Barton and Mido on Kane: Should Tottenham man have seen red?

Barton’s frustration is understandable. Under the current rules, Kane probably should have seen red. It is one of those tackles that many would suggest it is right in between, an orange card, perhaps.

But in terms of whether football has become too soft, and that the rules are somewhat too harsh when it comes to tackling – Barton’s view makes sense. It is perhaps surprising that ex-Spurs man Mido thought it was red.
