Joe Powell has put pen to paper on a new-one year contract with West Ham United after impressing on loan at Northampton Town during the second half of the season – and Carlton Cole has reacted on Instagram.
Attacking midfielder Powell, 20, was set to see his contract expire at West Ham despite catching the eye while out on loan. However, the Hammers have moved at the last minute to keep Powell until this time next year.
Seven goals and six assists in just 12 Premier League 2 outings this season saw Northampton opt to bring the versatile ace to Sixfields. He played 10 times for the League Two side, scoring two goals.
Now, Manuel Pellegrini has opted to give Powell another year to break into the senior side, by extending his contract as confirmed by the Hammers’ official Twitter account. Cole reacted on Instagram, applauding Powell.

Powell’s form for both the second string and indeed at Northampton has certainly warranted another year to show Pellegrini he deserves his chance in the senior side.
Indeed, Powell is already training with the Hammers first team. The only issue is the competition ahead of him. In his favoured position, Manuel Lanzini and Samir Nasri are considered the club’s best number 10’s.
Jack Wilshere is also returning from injury soon, while Robert Snodgrass has played in that position, too. But Powell should be given the chance to build on his excellent debut – the 8-0 win over Macclesfield in which he got two assists.
