Jonny Howson is one of three Middlesbrough players reportedly attracting interest from other Championship sides ahead of the January transfer window – and surely Leeds United have got to consider a move to bring Howson back to Elland Road.
The Northern Echo claim Howson, 31, is joined by Daniel Ayala and another former Leeds player in Adam Clayton in attracting Championship interest. Leeds have also been linked with a move for ex-Liverpool centre-back Ayala.
Both Ayala and Howson are in the final months of their contracts at the Riverside, while Clayton is set to see his deal expire at the end of the 2020-21 season. Howson played the entire 90 minutes during Saturday’s 4-0 Leeds win at Elland Road.
The former Norwich City star came through the ranks at Leeds and even captained the side as a youngster, clocking up 219 appearances in all competitions for the Whites. He was part of the side that returned to the Championship in 2009-10.
So, with his contract set to expire in the summer and Championship clubs reportedly keen, should Leeds look to bring Howson back to Elland Road – almost eight years after he left Elland Road to join Norwich in January 2012?
Marcelo Bielsa’s side certainly have more depth this season, but injuries are beginning to mount. Leeds have plenty of options in the middle of the park, but are currently without Adam Forshaw and Tyler Roberts to partner Mateusz Klich.
Jamie Shackleton has only just returned from injury, while Kalvin Phillips is suspended for Saturday’s short trip to take on Huddersfield Town. Phillips has little cover at the base of the midfield – and Howson would provide that.
Bielsa likes a player who is versatile and Howson is that too. He can play out wide, in holding midfield, box-to-box, attacking midfield or even up front – a position he played during his youth at Elland Road.
Likely to be available on the cheap in January with his contract ending in the summer, Howson would be a bargain. An experienced head to help the likes of Shackleton, Alfie McCalmont and Mateusz Bogusz. He also has 104 Premier League outings to his name.
Bringing Howson back on the cheap is a no-brainer.
