When Middlesbrough were promoted to the Premier League in 2016 they swiftly made some signings to try and remain there. One player they did bring in was Danish talent Viktor Fischer. Once subbed ‘the Danish Messi’ because of his excellent youth form at Ajax, he was an exciting capture.
Middlesbrough paid around £4 million for his services and fans were ready to greet a player with such pedigree. However, they were quickly left wondering what the fuss was about. Fischer struggled to find any form on Riverside. He played 16 times for the club but struggled with a knee complaint and failed to score. It was an unhappy time for the Dane.
Last summer, Boro gave up on Fischer after relegation to the Championship. He was sold to German side Mainz. It seemed, that his exit was justified. After playing just 10 Bundesliga games last season, fans felt Boro made the right call.

Mainz ditched him in January 2018, which is where things turned around for the attacker.
He headed home, joining FC Copenhagen on a five-year deal. He quickly found the form that took him to the World Cup this summer. This season has been sensational for Fischer. He did not take an extended break after the World Cup, getting straight into Europa League qualifying action in early July.
His form since has been extraordinary. In the 15 games he has played this season the 24-year-old has scored seven goals and assisted nine. Such form helped his side into Europe to the detriment of Atalanta and currently sitting top of the Danish table.
Middlesbrough will no doubt feel letting Fischer go was right at the time. He did not look up to the physical demands of English football. However, his form this season at least shows he did have the talent after all.
