It has been a stuttering start to Jonathan Woodgate’s reign as Middlesbrough manager but he got his first win in charge by beating Wigan 1-0 last night.
Britt Assombalonga’s goal at the Riverside Stadium gave Boro a foothold that Woodgate will hope to build on as the season goes by.
Woodgate was brought in to oversee a move away from the awful style of football brought in by Tony Pulis, as well as a shift towards younger players in order to reconnect with the fans.
But last night’s affair was not particularly impressive overall and there weren’t a great deal of positives apart from the result.

But one player who did stand out to many of the fans online was the display of Daniel Ayala, who marshalled the defence to a clean sheet.
Ayala has proved to be great value for money since joining from Norwich for a reported (BBC) £350,000 back in 2014 and continues to impress.
He will need to carry on adjusting to the demands of Woodgate to pass out from the back but on a night when a shutout and a victory were the order of the day, he caught the eye amid a largely drab performance.
