Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario endured a difficult evening on Friday as Spurs were knocked out of the FA Cup at the hands of Manchester City.

The 27-year-old made several good saves to keep Spurs in the game, but what happened in the build-up to the winner remains a source of contention.

Vicario had been putting up with Ruben Dias backing into him during corners for much of the match, and in the 88th minute, this ended up costing Tottenham.

The Italian was unable to hold the ball from Kevin De Bruyne’s corner under pressure from the defender, and Nathan Ake was on hand to convert from close range.

The incident split opinion amid fans, with some deeming it a foul that should’ve been punished and others saying Vicario needed to hold his ground better.

BBC Sport pundit Clinton Morrison held the latter opinion, saying on BBC Radio 5 Live: “Tottenham are moaning that Ruben Dias jumped into the back of Vicario. I think he has to be stronger there.”

Vicario took to social media on Friday night with a message expressing his sadness at being knocked out of the FA Cup and thanking the Spurs fans for their support.

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven was one of many who showed their support towards Vicario for his performance and his Instagram post.

Tottenham Hotspur will bounce back – TBR View

It’s certainly a bitter pill to swallow for Spurs, who admittedly were far from their best, but were only undone by one goal at the end of the game.

Nevertheless, Tottenham are building something solid with Ange Postecoglou at the helm. They’re much better than they were last season, both in terms of displays and results.

Spurs have also been one of the busier clubs in the January transfer window, bringing in Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin.

A top-four finish is certainly within reach, and then in the summer transfer window we could see even more top signings arrive at N17, which bodes well for the 2024/25 season.
