Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro have both praised Emerson Royal on social media after his display for Tottenham Hotspur yesterday.

Emerson Royal got the nod at left-back on Saturday as Tottenham picked up a 2-1 win over Everton.

The 24-year-old replaced the suspended Destiny Udogie in the starting lineup after the Italian picked up his fifth booking of the campaign at Nottingham Forest last Friday.

Royal has proven to be a useful option for Ange Postecoglou this term as he’s filled in across the backline. Of course, his natural position lies at right-back but he’s also covered in the heart of defence.

While Royal’s work in the attacking third leaves plenty to be desired, he continues to prove to be a reliable defensive asset for Tottenham.

Spurs rode their luck against the Toffees yesterday after goals from Richarlison and Heung-Min Son put them 2-0 up inside the opening 20 minutes.

But Royal put in a promising performance at left-back and has earned praise from Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro.

Van de Ven and Porro amazed by Royal’s latest Tottenham display

Royal took to Instagram after yesterday’s game to express his delight at picking up a crucial three points before Christmas.

He wrote: “This is Tottenham.”

Van de Ven and Porro both left comments beneath the post as they lauded their teammate following an impressive display.

Royal has divided opinion amongst the Tottenham faithful since joining the club for £26 million two summers ago.

The Brazilian struggled under Antonio Conte as he never seemed well-suited to playing as a wing-back.

But the defender is proving to be a useful player for Postecoglou as his versatility has been vital to Tottenham over the past couple of months.

Udogie will return from his one-match ban when Spurs travel to Brighton next week. But Royal could be called upon once again at centre-back after Cristian Romero went off injured yesterday.
