Former Newcastle United striker Micky Quinn has paid Martin Dubravka a huge compliment, branding the goalkeeper one of the club’s best signings of the last 10 years.

Dubravka was on top form during last weekend’s 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace, making key saves from Gary Cahill and Scott Dann, before finally being beaten by Patrick van Aanholt.

It was thanks to the Slovakian that the Magpies were beaten by just the solitary goal, and his performance has led to high praise from former striker Quinn.

He wrote in his Chronicle column: “Martin Dubravka? He’s one of the best signings they’ve had for probably the last 10 years. He was outstanding, kept us in it.

“If I was Steve Bruce I would have read the riot act (excusing Dubravka) because that performance against Palace just wasn’t good enough”

Dubravka cost Newcastle just £4.5 million to sign permanently in the summer of 2018 after an initial loan (Mirror), and he has well and truly proven to be excellent business by the club.

TBR’s view – Dubravka can keep Newcastle up

With goals proving hard to come by, it’s going to be vital for the defence to stay resolute.

With Dubravka between the sticks, Newcastle have a great chance of surviving, but the 31-year-old’s efforts need to be made to count further by his attacking teammates.

Should Newcastle go down, and at the moment they’re only seven points clear of relegation, it would not be a surprise to see teams coming in for the 24-cap international.
