Micky Gray has told Talksport that Leeds United could be the Premier League’s surprise package, mentioning the club in the same breath as discussing next season’s top four.

Gray wasn’t actually suggesting Leeds would finish in the top four next season but claimed teams must watch out for the newly-promoted outfit.

The Whites have been busy trying to add players to their ranks and Rodrigo Moreno and Robin Koch have been added to the first-team squad so far.

A plethora of youngsters have also been added but it will remain to be seen what part any of those signings have to play under Marcelo Bielsa next season.

Gray, thinks Leeds could be the surprise package though, fancying them to go well.

He told Talksport: “Without even thinking – is there one Champions League place left.

“Liverpool, City, Chelsea…and then there’s one left.

“Arsenal have strengthened, Tottenham are getting strong, Everton might know on the door and then you have Wolves, Leicester and a couple of others.

“Watch out for Leeds United, I swear. They are going to be the surprise package.”

Gray enjoyed two loan spells at Leeds during 2005 and 2007 and this could just be a case of him backing a former club.

Even the most ardent of United supporters won’t be backing their team to finish anywhere near the top-four – at least next season anyway.

Big club

Leeds still have the nucleus of last season’s team, with Koch and Moreno bolstering the ranks considerably.

With Bielsa at the helm, they could go well next season but even a comfortable mid-table finish which stabilises them as a top-flight club would have to be viewed as positive.

Leeds might well be the surprise package but in order for Gray’s prediction to come off, they might need a couple more additions before the window closes.
