Mick McCarthy reacts to Troy Parrott’s new contract at Tottenham

Troy Parrott’s new contract at Tottenham Hotspur has delighted supporters, but his international manager Mick McCarthy appears to be less than impressed.

The 18-year-old penned a new three-year deal with the club last week, having made his first-team debut earlier this season.

The highly rated starlet seems to have a very bright future ahead of him having been prolific for Spurs’ youth teams following his move from Belvedere in 2018.

Despite Parrott’s encouraging rise, Republic of Ireland manager McCarthy – who gave Parrott his international debut last year – delivered a fairly downbeat response when asked about his new contract.

He told The Irish Times: “Not really. “I wish he’d gone to Charlton and played games on loan.

“It’s great for him financially, he’s got a new contract but I wish he was playing football somewhere.

“He couldn’t go out before because of his age and I understand that but if he’s not playing competitive football he has very little chance of being in the squad.”

TBR’s view – Parrott could get Spurs chance

Mourinho recently claimed Parrott is doing extra training sessions working within the academy and the first-team in order to improve his all-round game (football.london).

He has been challenged by the Portuguese to work hard and earn his chance.

The Special One has shown he is willing to pick young players if they deserve a chance – Japhet Tanganga, of course, now a regular in the starting XI.

Admittedly Tanganga has a few years on Parrott, but the fact he is the only recognised striker available to Mourinho right now could see him get more chances than McCarthy is anticipating.
