The Spaniard proved to be a one-season wonder for Swansea City but boy was it a campaign to remember.

Michu arrived from Rayo Vallecano for just £2 million shortly after Swansea had defeated Reading in the play-off final.

He produced an unbelievable lethal instinct and helped the Swans to a ninth-placed finish.

Following such a blistering start to life in England, some loose reports had linked him with both Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Michu admits those might have been ambitious, but has claimed he had something to offer Arsenal.

He told Four Four Two: “I’m not sure I could have reached Barcelona or Madrid’s level.

“But at Arsenal, after 22 goals for Swansea, I could have offered something.”

Michu would never scale the heights of that season again and in hindsight perhaps Arsenal sensed that would be the case.

After leaving the Liberty Stadium he played for Napoli, Langreo and Real Oviedo before calling it quits in 2017.

For a man who was so devastating during his first season at Swansea, it seems bizarre that he seemed to struggle after.

Arsenal might have kept his career ticking for a few more years and it would have been interesting to see how he might have coped at a top club.

Michu’s demise was somewhat saddening as it had looked as though Swansea had found a gem based on his first season in the top-flight.

Moving to Arsenal would have been a fitting story but it simply wasn’t to be for the Spaniard.
