Michel Vorm defends under-fire Tottenham man following Manchester City defeat

Michel Vorm has told Stadium Astro that Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris remains one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, despite making a couple of mistakes against Manchester City on Saturday evening.

City took the lead from the penalty spot when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg felled Ilkay Gundogan, and Lloris will have been disappointed not to have kept Rodri’s penalty out – squeezing a poor effort past Lloris, who got a hand to it.

Some neat play from City inside the penalty area then saw Gundogan’s left-footed snapshot go past Lloris – this one certainly considered a mistake. Gundogan’s second was a long ball over the top, one where Tottenham’s defence were in the wrong.

Ex-Tottenham man and Lloris’ old teammate Vorm spoke of the French skipper and believes that Lloris is still one of the best – comparing him with David De Gea, Alisson and Ederson. He believes that Lloris has saved Spurs, more than let them down.

“Easy, for me he is one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League,” Vorm told Stadium Astro, when discussing Lloris. “Everyone makes mistakes, Alisson, De Gea, Ederson all make mistakes.

“If you play for Tottenham and France for that long – it says it all. You need to look at the whole picture, yes he has made mistakes but how many saves has he made to win games? We’ve never won a prize, but it goes both ways.”

TBR’s view – Lloris made mistakes, but criticism of him is harsh

Tottenham have been inconsistent but if any of Jose Mourinho’s players deserve praise for consistency other than the likes of Son Heung-min, Harry Kane and Hojbjerg – it is captain Lloris. A shaky spell a few years ago has been ushered aside.

Indeed, Lloris has been excellent over the past 18 months – perhaps benefiting from no fans entering the stadium. He has made numerous saves that have helped Tottenham, and could still lift the club’s first silverware since 2019 come April.

Yes, he made mistakes against City but Pep Guardiola’s side more than deserved the win.
