Michail Antonio says Moyes could’ve ‘gone nuts’ after what West Ham player did this season

West Ham United striker Michail Antonio has shared a story about Lucas Paqueta accidentally taking over penalty duties from Said Benrahma this season.

Antonio was speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast and said Paqueta took a penalty away from Benrahma this season.

The Brazilian has endured a difficult debut campaign in England after making the switch from Lyon over the summer.

He’s shown glimpses of his quality, but he has struggled to nail down a place in David Moyes’ side.

And Antonio claims that he could have faced Moyes’ wrath had he missed a penalty he shouldn’t have taken earlier in the campaign.

Antonio on Paqueta penalty

Antonio shared the story while talking to Newcastle United star Callum Wilson about players arguing over taking penalties.

The Hammers striker claims that Paqueta took a penalty for West Ham despite being told to give the ball to Benrahma.

This was down to a misunderstanding due to Paqueta’s lack of English. Fortunately for him, he netted the penalty. But Antonio says Moyes would’ve ‘gone nuts’ had he missed it.

“It happened this season with us,” Antonio explained. “It went unseen! Said Benrahma is our penalty taker but Lucas Paqueta was like I’m taking this pen.

“But he doesn’t speak much English and everyone was like give it to ‘Said’ and he was like ‘yeah’.

“And then he took it and stuck it in the top bins. So everyone was like ‘okay’.

The Hammers striker was then asked if anything happened in the dressing afterwards.

He responded: “As he scored nobody could really say anything but if he’d missed it the gaffer would have gone nuts!”

Paqueta has taken two penalties for West Ham and he has netted on both occasions, once at Leeds and the other against Genk. But Antonio didn’t clarify the exact game in which the incident happened.

Nevertheless, the 25-year-old is clearly a capable spot-kick taker. But it doesn’t seem as if he’ll be taking over penalty duties from Benrahma anytime soon.
