Michail Antonio predicted Everton to go down, now he could end up signing for them

Everton are thought to be considering signing West Ham United forward Michail Antonio, as Frank Lampard looks for new recruits.

The Toffees endured another miserable weekend as they lost to relegation rivals Southampton. Once again, Lampard was left to rue a poor Everton performance compounded by a lack of firepower at the top end of the pitch.

That’s led to reports today claiming that Antonio is now a target for Everton. The Hammers ace has fallen down the pecking order a bit under David Moyes. TalkSPORT reports West Ham are open to Antonio leaving, as long as they get someone else in through the door.

However, should Antonio sign for Everton, then he might have some explaining to do given his comments on the club earlier in 2022. Speaking at the time on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, Antonio actually tipped Everton to go down last season.

“Burnley are in and around it but the way they have played right now, I didn’t even include them in the three, because I feel they are going to be safe,” he said.

“I actually think it could be Everton because they’re not used to being down there or being in this fight.

“They’re used to being higher up the table and looking up, looking down is a completely different pressure and I don’t know if they can get themselves out of it.”

TBR’s View: Everton need Antonio, these comments can be brushed over

In the end, Antonio’s prediction was a wrong one. Burnley dropped, and Everton ended up safe. But this season they’re in the mire again, and relegation is a real possibility.

Everton could do with signing someone like Antonio. He’s proven at this level anyway and was lauded as ‘absolutely brilliant’ by Gary Neville for his ability to play the lone striker role.

Antonio might have predicted a rocky landing for Everton last year. But now the Toffees need him to help them avoid what he predicted in the first place.
