Michail Antonio makes admission on his form after being dropped

Michail Antonio has told The Footballer’s Football Podcast that he can have no complaints with not starting for West Ham at the weekend, insisting that he has not done well enough in the Premier League this season.

It has been a difficult start to the campaign for the Hammers. And the 32-year-old has certainly been out of form in the top-flight so far.

He went into Saturday’s clash with Wolves having scored just one in his first seven Premier League games. And that prompted David Moyes to pick Gianluca Scamacca to start their latest fixture.

The Italian has shown glimpses since his arrival in the summer. But he was awaiting his first league goal for West Ham. Thankfully, his wait came to an end at the weekend.

Scamacca scored a brilliant goal in the 2-0 win. Antonio meanwhile, had to wait until the midway point in the second-half to come on for the home side.

Antonio has been such an integral player for West Ham in recent years. But the forward conceded that he can have no complaints with not starting for the side at the moment.

“I’ve said it before. I’ve not been scoring all season, I’ve got three goals all season. Two in the Europa, one in the Premier League. There’s now competition. So at the end of the day, I’m not doing it in the Premier League. And I’m not scoring so he has to give the next man a chance,” he told The Footballer’s Football Podcast.

“And he’s got his chance, he’s scored, got man of the match, played very well. I said it when we first signed him, I saw him in training, I said: ‘he is quality. He’s got the quality’. Great goal, taken it so well. So I know I’ve got good competition. But one thing with me is, this is not going to knock me. I always believe in myself.”

It is only going to benefit West Ham to have Antonio and Scamacca pushing each other. Scamacca will have arrived full of confidence after such an impressive time with Sassuolo.

Antonio meanwhile, has all of that experience. He has been such a brilliant signing for West Ham over a number of years.

Obviously, supporters will feel a lot happier once Moyes’ men are much higher up the table. But it does appear that they have more than enough quality in a number of areas to ensure that they quickly recover from their disappointing start.
