West Ham United forward Michail Antonio has given his honest opinion on the Hammers fans who left early in Sunday’s 6-0 loss to Arsenal.

The West Ham star, speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, admitted that he couldn’t blame them for doing so, considering how badly their team was playing.

Antonio, who has only returned to training last week following his injury lay-off, was at the London Stadium as West Ham found themselves 4-0 down at half-time.

Arsenal broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute through William Saliba, after which the floodgates opened against the Hammers.

Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Magalhaes and Leandro Trossard got on the scoresheet to effectively end the game as a contest by the interval, prompting a fan exodus.

Saka then scored his second on 63 minutes and, to really rub salt into the wound, former West Ham captain Declan Rice scored a worldie not long after.

“It was a madness,” conceded Antonio. “I was there and I didn’t even know what to do with myself.

“When the fourth goal went in and you are seeing floods of fans walking out. It’s one of those situations where honestly you can’t really blame them.

“I’m going to be honest. You do want your fans to stay around and try and support you and how well you can get back in.

“But you can’t really blame them in that situation, 4-0 down against Arsenal in the first half.”

Big month ahead as West Ham face Premier League strugglers

West Ham weren’t having a bad season, but this year, they’ve been terribly off-form. The Hammers are yet to win in 2024 and have lost their last two games by an aggregate 9-0 scoreline.

Admittedly, David Moyes has guided the Hammers through choppier waters before. However, with his contract up at the end of the season, it remains to be seen what happens.

The next month will be crucial – and probably decide whether Moyes a new deal – as West Ham face a run of four matches against sides in the bottom seven.

The Hammers are away at Nottingham Forest this weekend, with Brentford, Everton and Burnley to follow.
