Michael Owen suggests Phil Foden was just as good as Mo Salah at Liverpool

Both Phil Foden and Mo Salah were in fine form as Liverpool and Manchester City played out a pulsating encounter at Anfield yesterday.

The duo were both on the scoresheet, with Salah scoring a particularly stunning goal in the second half. Foden, to his credit, took his own chance brilliantly and was by far and away Man City’s best player.

Of course, a lot of the talk afterwards was about Salah and that goal he scored. But former Liverpool striker, Michael Owen, believes that Foden was just as good – if not better – than Salah during the game.

“I know Mo Salah scored one of the goals of the season so far. But I thought Phil Foden was tremendous. Right from minute one until the end,” Owen told Premier League productions.

“Scored a goal as well. Created chances as well. Gave Liverpool problems down that left hand side. I thought he was exceptional.”

It was a statement performance from City and Foden really. Liverpool might have snatched a point, but Pep Guardiola’s side were superior for most of the 90 minutes.

And that’s why they are world-class players. Time after time they deliver, and on the biggest stage yesterday, both did.

Owen is right about Foden. On any other day he is the best player on the field and even though Salah did score that goal, the City star probably still eclipsed him.

Surely, then, England have to build the team around Foden now. He is simply that good. For Salah, there are no more words to describe him.
