Tottenham Hotspur star James Maddison has been praised by Michael Owen for his bravery on the ball.

The Spurs summer signing has been crucial in helping Ange Postecoglou’s side go top of the Premier League table.

Maddison has registered three goals and five assists from just nine Premier League outings for Spurs this term.

In addition, the England international has created an impressive 29 chances for his new club teammates.

Maddison was once again instrumental for Tottenham as they ran out 2-0 winners over Fulham on Monday night.

He doubled Spurs’ advantage in the second half after Son Heung-min had opened the scoring in the first half.

James Maddison ‘brilliant to watch’

Owen, speaking on Premier League Productions (23/10/23, 10:05pm), loved what he saw from Maddison against the Cottagers.

“He is so brave with the ball,” said the England icon. “Even in the first half, I just purred with three or four of his passes. He just whips them into that frontman. Takes risks.

“He gives the ball away a fair bit, but that’s exactly what you have to do if you are going to provide the assists or score the goals that he scores.

“It’s brilliant to watch. He is always trying to make something happen.

“There are a lot of safe players around. They pass it around and keep their stats up and the percentage of keeping the ball.

“He doesn’t care. He literally doesn’t care – he will risk it every time he gets it. On those magic moments he creates and scores.”

Our view

It really does seem like Maddison has been the missing piece for Tottenham. They now finally have a Christian Eriksen-like player again in their ranks.

He has been so good that he and Son Heung-min have effectively made sure that Harry Kane hasn’t been missed since his move to Bayern Munich.

It’s a great time to be a Tottenham fan at present. Spurs fans now have the opportunity to dream of a top four finish at least, and possibly much more.
