Michael Owen has told Premier League Productions’ coverage of Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat to Brighton at Anfield on Wednesday night that right now, the Reds are not in a title race – following Andy Robertson’s comments.

Brighton midfielder Steven Alzate scored the only goal of the game at Anfield as Brighton produced a stunning performance to beat the Reds. It sees the Seagulls take a big step towards safety – Liverpool have taken one back.

Following the win over Tottenham last time out, supporters felt the Liverpool of old were back. They have since signed two new central defenders, and the enthusiasm and optimism was back on Merseyside.

But that came crashing to another halt on Wednesday. Robertson said after the match: “As this moment stands, we’re not in the title race,” and Owen agreed, after Liverpool slipped seven points behind Manchester City.

“Yeah at the moment,” Owen said, when asked if they were no longer in a title race. “What is it, seven points and a game in hand City have? That’s a lot, we’re past halfway. If Liverpool don’t beat Man City at the weekend, then.

“It’s not just the points total, it’s what is going to happen in the future and Liverpool just are not playing well. They haven’t played that well for the last month or so – but they’re better against better teams.”

TBR’s view – Do Liverpool need to be concerned?

The next three Premier League games could define Liverpool’s season. They take on two of their Premier League title rivals in Leicester City and Manchester City, as well as taking on Merseyside rivals Everton who are impressing.

Really, Liverpool need to win all three – not only to catch Pep Guardiola’s men but to also give themselves the confidence required to go on and win the Premier League title. But failure to do so, and they should be concerned.
