Michael Owen has told Premier League Productions that “reading between the lines”, Harry Kane might not be particularly happy at Tottenham Hotspur under Jose Mourinho’s defensive style of play.
Kane, 27, has been in sensational form for Spurs this season – scoring 18 and creating 14 more in his 26 appearances this season. The England captain has benefited from dropping deeper, proving as creative as he is lethal.
Spurs failed to beat Fulham on Wednesday night, though. Despite Kane’s diving header which gave Spurs the lead, Mourinho’s men decided to sit back and it saw Fulham capitalise – with Ivan Cavaleiro heading past Hugo Lloris.
Ex-England striker Owen discussed Kane’s post-match comments and thinks Tottenham’s number 10 would prefer to be adding to his tally – rather than helping Spurs defend a 1-0 lead.

“I’m reading between the lines,” Owen said. “He’s [Kane] saying ‘We were a bit panicky and dropped too deep’. Basically, he would prefer to score another goal. When the handbrake is off, we’re beating Fulham 1-0.
“It is a natural instinct to sit back, but the best form of defence is attack and I think Jose Mourinho could shake it up a bit and sometimes bring a centre-forward on.”
TBR’s view – Kane’s tally is better than ever, despite defensive style
Even though Mourinho has got his side playing somewhat conservatively and stinging opponents on the counter attack, Kane is scoring more goals on a more regular basis than he has ever done – and is creating much more.
While Kane would have liked to have got forward more often on Wednesday night, he is still getting the chances and perhaps even more given that Spurs are playing on the counter and getting in behind teams more often.
