Liverpool were pegged back in the closing stages of their 1-1 draw against Brighton on Saturday afternoon, which was a game that once again left people discussing the VAR system.
Diogo Jota’s second-half goal on the hour mark looked like the winner for visitors Liverpool, but Pascal Gross converted a penalty in the 93rd minute to earn Brighton a point and help them move six points clear of the relegation places.
The controversy stemmed from the penalty incident in stoppage time, as Reds left-back Andy Robertson was adjudged to have fouled Danny Welbeck in the box.
Referee Stuart Attwell was advised by VAR to review the challenge on the pitchside screen and he overturned his decision to award Brighton a penalty after initially deciding against a foul.
Ex-Liverpool striker and current pundit Owen gave his response on Twitter to the incident, insisting it was “never a pen” in real time and was left frustrated about the slow motion replay.
TBR’s View:
Liverpool’s point saw them return to the top of the Premier League table, albeit they may not still be there by the time the weekend’s fixtures are over.
There will be a real sour taste in Liverpool mouths after Saturday’s result, as there is real upset about the awarding of the penalty after Robertson made contact with Welbeck, and perhaps more alarmingly they lost yet another player to injury as James Milner was forced off.
With fixtures coming so frequently right now, it’s a real test of Klopp’s squad right now and they are going to have an obvious drop off in results if their bad luck continues.
