Michael Owen has taken to Twitter to share his excitement about Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara after the Spain international finally returned from injury to come off the bench during Wednesday’s draw with Newcastle.
Summer signing Thiago, 29, has been blighted with injuries and then a positive test result since his summer move from Bayern Munich. His substitute outing against Newcastle was only his third appearance for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Liverpool struggled to another draw but remain top of the Premier League as Steve Bruce’s Newcastle earned a clean sheet against The Reds. Liverpool have now failed to beat Fulham and West Brom as well as Newcastle.
Thiago managed 17 minutes in what was his first outing since recovering from a long-term knee problem and Liverpool icon Owen responded on Twitter, underlining his excitement over the experienced midfield dynamo.
TBR’s view – Thiago’s return crucial to PL title pursuit
Not only is Thiago returning a boost for Liverpool given the Spaniard’s obvious ability, but it finally hands the Reds a replacement for Fabinho in central midfield and allows Jordan Henderson to move one space forward.
Henderson is best suited to the role just in front of the anchoring midfielder but with Liverpool’s centre-back crisis forcing Fabinho to play in defence, Henderson has covered the pivot role. Now, Thiago can do it.
