Michael Owen has now used just two words to describe Newcastle United as a club

Michael Owen has a difficult relationship with Newcastle United, it must be said.

Indeed, Owen isn’t the most popular figure on Tyneside. The striker played for Newcastle between 2005 and 2009, and, in that time, he had his fair share of problems.

Michael Owen had injury issues during his time at St James’ Park, while he didn’t do himself any favours when he called a move to Newcastle a ‘step down’.

On top of that, Owen got on the wrong side of Alan Shearer a few years ago.

Now, speaking to Canal+ Sport, Owen has been asked to give a quick description of what he thinks of Newcastle when playing a game of word association.

Michael Owen’s two-word description of Newcastle United

Owen was asked to briefly describe Newcastle United during a game of word association.

Owen has a difficult history with his former club, so, as you can imagine, he was hesitant to say too much about the Magpies.

However, he did come up with an apt description of Newcastle, simply saying ‘passionate fans’ when pressed to speak about his former club.

Owen didn’t have the best of times at Newcastle, but even he admires the support the fanbase give the club.

Michael Owen’s record for Newcastle

Owen isn’t the most popular figure in Newcastle United’s history for numerous reasons.

Indeed, Owen has even admitted he regrets signing for Newcastle in the past.

However, despite everything, the striker didn’t actually have a bad record for the Magpies.

30 goals in 79 games is a decent return, the problem is that Owen wasn’t fit most of the time, and, towards the end, he’d seemingly checked out as his contract was coming to an end ahead of the club’s relegation to the Championship.

Owen’s spell at Newcastle remains a very strange chapter in what was an incredible career for the one-time Ballon d’Or winner.
