Michael Owen has explained what surprised him about hat-trick hero Diogo Jota during BT Sport’s coverage of Liverpool’s 5-0 win over Atalanta – claiming the Portuguese attacker’s speed has shocked him.

Jota, 23, put Atalanta to the sword with a stunning hat-trick as the summer signing took his tally to seven goals in 10 Liverpool appearances. He opened the scoring after a brilliant pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold and a stunning chip.

It was two moments later, as Jota brought a long ball down with a brilliant touch before a lashing a right-footed effort into the corner. Jota notched up a hat-trick goal and Liverpool’s fifth after rounding the Atalanta goalkeeper.

Sadio Mane and Mo Salah also got their names on the score sheet. Liverpool icon Owen was stunned by Jota’s pace, claiming that supporters are not used to the versatile attacker running in behind. So far, he is looking as money well spent.

“What surprised me about Jota is just how quick he is. He’s much quicker than I thought. We aren’t used to seeing him run in behind, but he’s so quick,” Owen discussed after the full-time whistle in Bergamo.

TBR’s view – Should Jota be given start against Manchester City?

Jota and Roberto Firmino are different players. While Jota is renowned for his explosiveness in front of goal – proven by his seven goals in 10 Liverpool outings – he lacks the creativity that Firmino offers.

Starting Jota means Liverpool alter the way they play – the system that saw them win the Champions League in 2019 and Premier League title earlier this year. Firmino should be used for creativity, and Jota brought on when a goal is required.
