Michael Owen and Luis Garcia have responded on Twitter, after Steven Gerrard opted to swap Rangers for Aston Villa. The Liverpool legend has signed a contract at Villa Park until the summer of 2025.

The 41-year-old gaffer leaves Rangers after more than three years in the role, clocking up 193 appearances as Gers gaffer. He won the Scottish Premiership, going unbeaten in 2020-21.

Gerrard comes in, replacing Dean Smith. The latter was sacked on Sunday by Villa, having lost five Premier League matches in a row – the last of which was a 1-0 loss to Southampton.

Christian Purslow met Gerrard for lunch in London on Wednesday night, and a deal has been thrashed out. He is expected to be joined by his Rangers staff, including Gary McAllister.

Having played alongside Gerrard for Liverpool, both Garcia and Owen have responded on Twitter to the news that Gerrard has swapped Rangers for Villa – giving their honest verdicts.

Owen and Garcia discuss Gerrard’s Villa move: What needs doing?

Well, he needs to get Villa winning again. What Gerrard will benefit from, is that the Villa squad is already excellent – capable of achieving a much-better league position than it is currently in.

He just needs to get a bit more out of his players – the under-fire players. Tyrone Mings, Leon Bailey, Emi Buendia, Douglas Luiz and others are lacking in form, below their best somewhat.

What will help him get off to a good start, is having more than a week to work with the players – and getting off to a winning start. Villa host Brighton next weekend.
