Michael Essien says reported Liverpool target is the best player in his position at the World Cup
Liverpool have been heavily linked with Jude Bellingham in recent months.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein recently claimed that the Reds “do want to sign him”.
In addition, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has apparently been leading the pursuit of Bellingham himself.
However, the race remains open, despite the Anfield outfit being an early front-runner.
One thing’s for sure though; whoever signs Bellingham will be getting one of the best midfielders in the world.
Despite being just 19 years old, Bellingham has been absolutely sensational at the World Cup.
So much so, in fact, that Michael Essien has named Bellingham as his top midfielder in Qatar.
The Chelsea and Ghana legend was one of the best midfielders in the world in his prime.
Clearly, game recognises game.
The official FIFA World Cup Twitter account shared a quick Q&A with Essien on Thursday.
Here are his picks for stars of the tournament, including the reported Liverpool target.
If Bellingham is this good now, it’s frightening to think how much better he’ll be once he reaches his ceiling.
Liverpool really need to overhaul their midfield next year, and the Borussia Dortmund star would be the best player to build the team around.
England fans will also be eager to see how Belilngham develops in the coming years.
Although the Three Lions were knocked out at the quarter-final stage this year, the future’s certainly bright for them too.
Not that any further proof was needed about the 19-year-old’s credentials, but Bellingham really was outstanding at the World Cup.
England teammate Phil Foden tipped him to become “the best midfielder in the world”.
Maybe he’s got there already?
