Former Tottenham defender and now Sky Sports pundit, Michael Dawson, has expressed his frustration at the performances of new signing, Rodrigo Bentancur.
The midfield was deployed in central midfield alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg against Manchester United as Antonio Conte persisted with the two in the middle he’s been using all season. Bentancur was signed in January, and while he’s done ok in the main, he’s not quite had the impact of fellow new signing, Dejan Kulusevski.

And speaking on Sky Sports last night, former Spurs ace Dawson insisted that Bentancur needs to offer more to Conte in the middle of the park, including a more creative spark.
“Bentancur, there’s got to be more creativity. You’re playing with two holding midfielders, especially if it’s Hojbjerg, they’ve got to create more. Bentancur, he has to give more into the team going forward, he can’t just be so safe,” Dawson told Sky Sports after the game.
The Uruguayan was well-known to Spurs transfer chief Fabio Paratici, hence his signing. However, he’ll be looking to produce more if Tottenham fans are going to be convinced by him.
TBR’s View: Dawson Right About Bentancur And Hojbjerg
It’s hard to strike a balance for the Tottenham midfield pair, especially when there is so much attacking threat in other positions. But at the end of the day, it’s something they’ll need to get right and quickly.
Harry Kane, as we know, drops deep to try and create. But Dawson is right in that Bentancur needs to offer that bit more going forward. He’s neat and tidy on the ball, but that doesn’t always wash in the Premier League.
