Michael Dawson backs a Tottenham move to land Antonio Conte, thinks Daniel Levy deserves praise
Michael Dawson has told TalkSPORT (Friday, 9.05AM) that Daniel Levy will deserve massive praise if Tottenham Hotspur pull off a move to get Antonio Conte. Reports state that Spurs are closing in on the appointment of the Italian gaffer, who won the Scudetto with Inter Milan just last month.
Alasdair Gold claimed earlier this week that Levy is expecting to appoint Conte as gaffer – while other reports state that he is close to joining. Conte will be the second successive manager Levy has appointed that has previously worked for both Inter and Chelsea, after Jose Mourinho.
But Conte is seen as a huge coup. A Premier League and Serie A winner, Conte has also impressed as manager of Juventus, Atalanta, Siena and more. Now, he embarks on just his second role outside of Italy. Ex-Tottenham defender Dawson believes Levy deserves praise for luring Conte to Spurs.
Dawson also discussed whether he believes the appointment of Conte will tempt Harry Kane to stay. The 27-year-old striker has been strongly linked with the exit door, as both Manchester clubs reportedly eye a move. But Dawson – a free agent after his Forest release – suggests Kane could stay.
“If they get him – it’s one of those. Last week it was Pochettino coming back. Levy has sent the intention out and is doing everything he can. He has had a lot of criticism, but getting Conte in would change that. It would be a coup. What he has won is incredible. He is a serial winner, but he will want money to spend. He wants to be chasing the title,” Dawson said.
“I think he will want Harry to stay. Harry wants to go and win trophies, but surely Levy has brought in Conte to win trophies. I agree [they need defenders]. Sanchez has not been as good as his first season. Conte plays a back three and wing backs. I am sure he will want one or two players to tighten the defensive positions. You’ve got to keep clean sheets.”
Conte can take Tottenham back into the top four, after Dawson claim
Many pundits have drawn similarities between Conte and Mourinho. But the difference is that Mourinho is starting to run out of ideas, while Conte has his own fresh idea. He is in the peak of his managerial career, while Mourinho is on a slippery slope downwards after Spurs and Man United.
Conte is an exciting manager. He has his own identity on the pitch, and his passion will excite Tottenham fans. He is certainly more attacking than Mourinho. Conte will be tasked with making Spurs a Champions League side again this season, and if backed, he is capable of doing so.
