Michael Chopra reacts as reports claim Newcastle could attract Marc Overmars

Newcastle United could reportedly raid Ajax for director of football Marc Overmars – and Michael Chopra is excited at the prospect of his arrival.

Overmars, 48, has overseen the rise of Ajax over the last nine years – joining the Dutch club back in 2012. His work in the transfer market is exceptional.

The 1997-98 Premier League winner has become renowned for signing players on the cheap – and selling academy products for massive fees.

Matthijs de Ligt, Donny van de Beek, Frenkie de Jong and Davinson Sanchez have all left for massive figures – while Overmars has replaced them well.

The current Ajax side includes some Premier League rejects that have been reborn in Amsterdam – Daley Blind, Dusan Tadic and Sebastian Haller.

De Telegraaf report that Overmars is a target for Newcastle’s new owners – with the Dutchman likely to be tempted by the Saudi Arabia PIF wealth.

Chopra, who has been vocal throughout the Newcastle takeover, reacted to the reports that Overmars could become Newcastle’s new transfer chief.

Chopra on Overmars: No-one more suited to Newcastle role

As stated, Overmars has an incredible eye for a deal – a player that suits a club. But he also maximises the value, when selling or buying.

With Newcastle’s enormous wealth, clubs are going to try and maximise their asking prices with the Toon on the table. But that has problems.

Look at Nicolas Pepe. He cost £72million, but is clearly not a £72million player. That price tag has affected him, the pressure on his shoulders huge.

The right fee must be paid for the right player and as Chopra says, Overmars would be a brilliant appointment to the role.
